My QNAP works on the LAN but cannot reach the internet or cloud backup. Is the default gateway wrong?

QUICK ANSWER

Local access and external routing are different tests. Check the NAS’s selected default interface, gateway and DNS before editing static routes. Multiple connected adapters can make the intended outbound path unclear.

Applies to: QTS or QuTS hero Network & Virtual Switch; menu wording varies by version.

Work through these checks

  1. From a working local session, record all connected interfaces, IP/subnet settings and the intended router. Keep an alternative management path before changing networking on a remotely administered NAS.
  2. Open Network & Virtual Switch > Network > Interfaces > System Default Gateway. Check whether automatic selection chose the intended adapter, or review the manual gateway selection and available failover setting.
  3. Check DNS and time separately. A reachable external IP with failed name lookups suggests a different problem from an unreachable gateway. Ask the network administrator to test the actual backup or update destination.
  4. Use a static route only for a known additional destination network with a defined next hop and interface. Record each change and retest one service; do not add broad workaround routes copied from a forum.

Confirm the result

LAN management remains available and the intended package update or cloud/remote backup connection works through the approved route.

Before going further: Changing interfaces or routes can end your session and interrupt VMs or containers. Arrange onsite access before a change that could isolate the NAS.

If you need help

Include these details in your ticket: OS version, redacted interface/gateway/DNS settings, affected destination and recent adapter/router changes.
