Frequently Asked Question
Time Machine says the QNAP backup is already in use. Should I delete the sparsebundle?
QUICK ANSWER
Keep the backup intact. The message can follow an interrupted session, a connection problem or software interference. Diagnose the Mac and NAS connection before removing any part of the backup image.
Applies to: macOS Time Machine using a supported QNAP network destination.
Work through these checks
- Stop the current Time Machine attempt normally. Check whether another Mac or session is still using the same backup. Record the full error and the last successful backup; do not remove lock files inside the sparsebundle.
- Confirm the Mac is on the intended network and can reach the selected backup destination. Check NAS share/quota capacity and free space on the Mac itself; both can affect a backup.
- Review recent macOS, NAS and security-software changes. QNAP documented one older Big Sur/Sophos-specific case, but that diagnosis must not be applied to every current Mac. Keep security enabled while the administrator investigates its logs.
- After a controlled Mac restart and a stable connection, retry. If a previous network backup exists, use Time Machine’s Verify Backups option where offered. Preserve the result and error if it still fails.
Confirm the result
A new backup completes and a small file can be restored from the intended history. A successful ordinary SMB mount alone is insufficient.
Before going further: Do not delete the sparsebundle, its bands or session files, or start a fresh archive over the only recovery copy.
If you need help
