My encrypted QNAP volume is locked after a restart. Will resetting the admin password unlock it?

QUICK ANSWER

No. The volume’s encryption password or key file is separate from the NAS administrator login. If neither is available, QNAP cannot reset the encryption secret to recover the encrypted data.

Applies to: QTS volume encryption; encrypted shared folders and QuTS hero have their own controls.

Work through these checks

  1. Confirm the exact status is Locked, rather than a missing or failed RAID group. Identify whether this is an encrypted volume or an encrypted shared folder before following a recovery procedure.
  2. Locate the encryption password or exported key in your organisation’s secure records. An administrator password reset or a chassis reset does not create a replacement decryption key.
  3. Use the normal QTS unlock control for that volume with the correct password or key file. Avoid repeated guesses and never post the key or a screenshot containing it in a public discussion.
  4. If the volume is currently unlocked but the recovery material is missing, back up readable data immediately before another restart or shutdown. If already locked with no key or password, preserve the drives and seek advice about other existing backups.

Confirm the result

The correct volume unlocks and sample files open. Create and verify an independent backup, then review secure key storage and the intended auto-unlock policy.

Before going further: Do not delete or recreate the volume while trying to recover it. A data-recovery or warranty service cannot promise to bypass properly implemented encryption.

If you need help

Include these details in your ticket: Model/QTS version, Locked status, encryption type and whether a password/key or separate backup is available.
