Frequently Asked Question
My QNAP volume is Read/Delete even though it shows free space. What should I check?
QUICK ANSWER
Check the parent storage pool as well as the volume. A thin volume or a snapshot-enabled thick volume can enter Read/Delete when the pool has too little unallocated space, even when the volume’s file view appears to have room.
Applies to: QTS Storage & Snapshots; QuTS hero uses a different storage design.
Work through these checks
- Open Storage & Snapshots > Storage/Snapshots. Select the affected volume and parent pool. Record both capacities, volume type, snapshots and current status before making changes.
- Review snapshots, recycle bins, guaranteed snapshot reservation and thin-volume allocation. Files removed from a thin volume may need a supported space-reclaim operation before pool capacity becomes available.
- Use the pool’s Free some space controls to review eligible actions. Remove only recovery points or data that the owner has approved for deletion and that are protected by an independent backup.
- Allow reclaim or cleanup to finish and refresh the pool status. If capacity cannot be released safely, plan a supported pool expansion. Conversion between volume types can remove snapshots and must not be an emergency first click.

Genuine QNAP status example. Check both the affected volume and its parent pool; the label alone does not identify which data can be removed safely. Tap the image to enlarge. Interface details may differ by software version.
Confirm the result
The volume returns to normal read/write status and a small test file can be saved, read back and removed. Verify both pool free space and retained restore points.
Before going further: Do not delete the volume or pool, force a mount or erase all snapshots to clear the warning. If it becomes Unmounted or Not Active, stop and seek assessment.
If you need help
Include these details in your ticket: QTS version, volume type, pool/volume capacity screens, snapshot usage and exact status.
