How to use Hybrid Backup Sync

1. Install Hybrid Backup Station

To install Hybrid Backup Sync on a QNAP NAS, first log into the NAS as an administrator and ensure that it is connected to the Internet. Go to "App Center" > "QTS Essentials" or "Backup/ Sync", scroll down the page until you find Hybrid Backup Sync, and click "Add To QTS".


2. Start using Hybrid Backup Sync

After the installation is complete, click the shortcut icon on the main menu or desktop to start using Hybrid Backup Sync.

Create a storage space

Having a storage space in advance will help you manage your storage space and save time on creating backup jobs.
To create a storage space, go to "Storage Space" on the main menu and click the create button to open a window with different options for storage spaces.


Select where you want to create the storage space.


For local storage space, you only need to select a folder and click "OK" to set up the storage space.


For remote storage space and cloud storage space, you need to create a remote profile before setting up your storage space.
Select "New Profile" and click "Settings" to create a remote profile.


Enter your remote IP address/host name and password and check the connection by clicking "Test". If the connection is successful, click "OK" to create this remote profile.


After creating the remote profile, select it and the folder and click "Apply" to set up the remote storage space.
If you have created a remote account and only want to choose another folder as the storage space, you can also choose one remote account on the drop-down list and select the folder to set up the remote storage space.


Note:
If this is the first time using the RTRR (Real-time Remote Replication) service on the remote NAS, please go to the RTRR Server in Hybrid Backup Sync and enable RTRR Server on the remote NAS.

If you want to create a cloud storage space, choose a cloud storage provider/supported protocol to open the "Create Cloud Storage Space" wizard.

Note: You must install Cloud Backup Sync from the App Center to remotely connect to cloud services.

Click "Settings" to open an authentication wizard for creating a cloud profile by entering the required account information.


After successfully creating the cloud profile, please select a cloud profile from the drop-down list.


Enter the storage name and the container/bucket/vault name. Click "Apply" to finish creating the cloud storage space.


Note: You don’t need to select a folder while creating a cloud storage space. Select an existed folder or give a folder name to create a folder as the backup destination when creating a backup job.

Create a backup job for your files on a QNAP NAS

To backup the files on your QNAP NAS, select "Backup" and choose either local backup, remote backup, or cloud backup to start creating your backup job.


1. Create a local backup job

To backup your files on the NAS to local folders or external devices, select "Local Backup".


Select the source location and backup destination, and click "Apply".


If you have created a storage space for your backup job, it should be in the Backup Destination drop-down list and you can select it as your target backup destination.
If you have not created any storage spaces, you can create one on this page. Click "Select Local Storage" and select "" to open the "Create Local Storage Space" wizard.


Select a folder to be your storage space and click "OK".


In this page, you have options to execute the job after you create it by selecting "Backup Now" and the option to enable multi-version backup for it.


2. Create a remote backup job

To backup the files on your NAS to a remote NAS, select "Remote Backup".


Select the source location and backup destination, and click "Apply".


If you have created a storage space for your backup job, it should be in the Backup Destination drop-down list and you can select it as your target backup destination.
If you have not created any storage spaces, you can create one on this page. Click "Select Remote Storage" and select "" to open the "Create Remote Storage Space" wizard. Please refer to "Create a storage space" for more information.


In this page, you have the option to execute the job after you create it by selecting "Backup Now" and the option to enable multi-version backup for it.

Note: You must install Hybrid Backup Sync on your remote NAS to enable multi-version backup.

3. Create a cloud backup job

To backup the files on your NAS to cloud storage, select "Cloud Backup".


Select a source location, and for backup destination, please select cloud storage and give a folder name or select an existing folder. Then click "Apply".


If you have created a storage space for your backup job, it should be in the Backup Destination drop-down list and you can select it as your target backup destination.
If you have not created any storage space, you can also create one on this page. Click "Select Cloud Storage" and then select "" to open a window with cloud services options.


Choose a cloud storage provider/supported protocol and click "Next" to open the "Create Cloud Storage Space" wizard. Please refer to "Create a storage space" for further information.

Create a restore job to restore your files to a QNAP NAS

To restore your files to a QNAP NAS, select "Restore" and choose to restore from a local NAS, remote NAS, or cloud.


1. Create a restore job from backup jobs.

To restore your files to a local NAS, select where your backup job is ("Local NAS", "Remote NAS" or "Cloud") and select "Backup Jobs" to choose a backup job for creating the restore job.

Click "Next" to start creating the restore job.


First select the restore source. If multi-version backup is enabled you can choose what version to restore.
After that, select either "Restore to original folders" or choose to restore the files to another destination folder. Click "Apply".


You can also add a sub folder to select as the destination. Enter the folder name and click the add button to add a sub folder.


Note that the default setting of "Restore Now" is checked. If you don’t want to immediately run the restore job, please uncheck this option.
For conflict policy, select either "Rename", "Overwrite" or "Skip" to be the action when conflicts occur.


2. Create a restore job from destination

To restore your files to a local NAS from a destination, select where your files are ("Local NAS", "Remote NAS" or "Cloud") and select "Destination" to create the restore job.
For restoring files from your local NAS, select "Local NAS" first and then click "Next".


Select the restore source, choose the folders you want to restore, and then select either "Restore to original folders" or choose to restore files to any other destination folder. Click "Apply".


You can also add a sub folder to select as the destination. Enter the folder name and click the add button to add a sub folder.


Note that the default setting of "Restore Now" is checked. If you don’t want to immediately run the restore job, please uncheck this option.
For conflict policy, select either "Rename", "Overwrite" or "Skip" to be the action when conflicts occur.


If you choose to restore files from your remote NAS, you must first select a remote server then click "Next" to create the job. You can create a remote profile for your restore job on this page. Select "New Profile" from the drop-down list and the remaining settings are the same as creating a remote profile.


If you choose to restore files from the cloud, you must first select a cloud storage space, and then click "Next" to start creating the job. You can also create a cloud storage space for your restore job on this page. Select "Add Cloud Storage Space" to create a cloud storage space. Please refer to "Create a storage space" for further information on the remaining settings.


The settings for restore source for restoring files from cloud are slightly different from restoring files from local NAS and remote NAS.
If folders exist in the cloud storage space, select a folder that you want to restore and choose the restored content (Metadata + Data or Metadata only).
If folders do not exist in the cloud storage space, just choose the restored content. After that, select either "Restore to original folders" or choose to restore files to another destination folder and click "Apply".

Create a sync job for files on a QNAP NAS

To sync files from a QNAP NAS, select "Sync" and choose either to sync the files with a local NAS, remote server, or the cloud.


1. Create a sync job to sync files with a local NAS

To sync files from a local folder to another local folder or an external device, select "Sync with local NAS".


Select the source folder and destination folder. Click "Add" to add a folder pair.
After adding the folder pairs you want to add into a sync job, click "Apply" to create a sync job.


You can also delete the folder pair if you don’t want to add it to the sync job. Click the delete button to do so.

You can also add a sub folder to select as the source folder or the destination folder. Enter the folder name and click the add button to do so.


2. Create a sync job to sync files with a remote NAS/server

To sync files from a local folder to a remote NAS/server, you can choose one-way or two-way.

2.1. One-way sync between a local folder and a remote folder Select "One-way Sync" and click "Sync with remote server".


You can choose either to sync files from a local folder to a remote folder or sync files from a remote folder to a local folder. Choose one synchronization direction to create a remote sync job.


For local to remote sync, choose one of the network protocols and click "Next".


For remote to local sync, choose one of the network protocols and click "Next".


Select a remote profile as your target destination.
If you have created a remote profile, it should be in the remote server drop-down list and you can select it as your target destination.
If you have not created any remote profiles, you can create one on this page. Click the remote server drop-down list and select "" to open the "Add remote connection" wizard. Enter your remote IP address/host name and password and check the connection by clicking "Test". If your settings work, click "OK" to create this remote profile.
The remaining settings are the same as creating a local sync job.



2.2. Two-way sync between a local folder and a remote folder Select "Two-way Sync" and click "Sync with remote server". The remaining settings are the same as creating a one-way remote sync job.

Note: For two-way synchronization, both hosts must support the GMT time format and have the same time settings. You can configure these settings in the NTP server settings.

3. Create a sync job to sync files with the cloud

To sync your files from a local folder to cloud, you can choose one-way or two-way.

3.1. One-way sync from a local folder to the cloud Select "One-way Sync" and click "Sync with the cloud".


You can choose either to sync files from a local folder to the cloud or sync files from the cloud to a local folder. Choose a synchronization direction to create a cloud sync job.


Select a cloud profile as your task destination.
If you have created a cloud profile, it should be on the account list and you can select it as your target destination.


If you do not have any cloud profiles, you can also create one on this page. Choose one of the cloud services to authenticate your cloud account. After selecting a cloud profile, click "Next" to start creating a cloud sync job. The remaining settings are the same as creating a local sync job.



3.2. Two-way sync between a local folder and the cloud

Select "Two-way Sync" and click "Sync with the cloud". The remaining settings are the same as creating a one-way cloud sync job.
