Frequently Asked Question
HBS 3 connects to the remote QNAP but an RTRR backup never finishes. What should I check?
QUICK ANSWER
Check the job’s selected network path and the destination RTRR access rules. A reachable management page or open port does not prove that the job’s actual source interface is authorised.
Applies to: HBS 3 RTRR backup jobs, especially NAS units with multiple network interfaces.
Work through these checks
- Record the job’s last progress and first error, then stop the stalled job through HBS before editing it. Preserve the backup data and previous settings.
- In Storage Spaces > Remote NAS, select the actual destination and use Detect Server. Where offered, run Speed Test to check the saved RTRR credentials. Review the RTRR service on the destination if this fails.
- If the job has Rules > Network, compare Automatic with the intended Default Route or selected interface. Multiple interfaces can cause the job to leave through a different source address from the one allowed remotely.
- Have the administrator allow only the intended source addresses in the destination RTRR rules and check deliberate rate limits. Keep the backup path private or behind the approved VPN, then rerun one job.

Genuine QNAP HBS example: test the intended saved remote NAS entry. The example address and port are not settings to copy. Tap the image to enlarge. Interface details may differ by software version.

Genuine QNAP HBS example: review the job’s outbound interface. Keep the approved network and access rules in place. Tap the image to enlarge. Interface details may differ by software version.
Confirm the result
Confirm the job completes, transferred data is present and a small-file restore succeeds. A successful speed test alone is insufficient.
Before going further: Do not enable Allow all connections, expose RTRR to the internet or remove firewall controls as a general workaround.
If you need help
Include these details in your ticket: Both firmware/HBS versions, Detect Server/Speed Test result, job network setting and redacted interface/access-rule details.
