Why can I not add my existing Surveillance Station camera licence to a replacement NAS?

A purchased surveillance licence can be assigned to only one server at a time. Built-in default licences remain with their original Synology device.

Applies to: Surveillance Device Licence Packs used with Surveillance Station on supported Synology NAS/NVR models. Default licence counts and maximum camera capacity depend on the exact server.

Before you start: Plan the move so required recording coverage is maintained. Keep a private copy of purchased licence keys and proof of purchase before removing a licence. Do not post keys in a support screenshot.

Check and resolve

  1. Check License on the source and replacement servers. Identify purchased keys separately from built-in default licences, then confirm the replacement model can support the intended cameras and channel load.
  2. If the source server is accessible, ensure both servers can reach the validation service. On the source, use Show License Key to save the purchased key securely, then remove only the licence being transferred.
  3. On the replacement server, go to Surveillance Station > License > Add and follow the wizard with that purchased key. In CMS, confirm that the licence is allocated to the intended recording server.
  4. If the old server is unavailable, the migration route depends on its prior association with a valid Synology Account. Follow the target's Add License wizard and authenticate the source server's account when prompted.
  5. For an isolated network, use the documented offline-management route through Surveillance Station Client or DS cam. The client/mobile device must first complete validation where Internet access is available, then reconnect to the isolated server.
  6. After the licence appears on the target, check the camera allocation and make a test recording. Keep the original keys stored securely for future recovery.

Check the result

License shows the expected purchased entitlement on the correct target server, and the intended camera records successfully.
