Why can Windows 11 24H2 no longer open my Synology shared folders?

ACE SUPPORT · SYNOLOGY

Windows 11 24H2 changes can expose an existing guest access, signing or saved credential problem. Identify the actual error and use an authenticated SMB connection. Enabling SMB1 or switching off Windows security controls is not the default fix.

Applies to

Windows 11 24H2 Pro, Enterprise and Education clients with Synology DSM 7.x; Home has different default signing requirements. Older DSM releases use different labels.

Before you begin

Do not enable insecure guest logons, re-enable SMB1 or disable required signing as a general workaround. Keep existing backups and share permissions intact.

Work through these checks

  1. Record the Windows edition, DSM version, SMB Service version and complete error message. Check whether another authorised computer can open the same named share. This separates a client problem from a wider NAS or network fault.
  2. Sign in using a named DSM or domain account that has permission to the share. Confirm the account works through the appropriate NAS sign-in route. Guest access cannot provide the authentication required for a signed session.
  3. Have the NAS administrator open Control Panel > File Services > SMB > Advanced Settings. In DSM 7.2 and later, review Server signing status. Client defined permits negotiation with a client that requires signing; Force requires it. Confirm the setting against the current SMB policy before saving.
  4. Check that the connection uses the correct server and share name and that saved Windows credentials belong to the intended account. Change only the entry for this NAS if an administrator confirms it is stale. Reconnect and test with a small disposable file.

Confirm the result

Confirm the authorised user can read the share and, where permitted, create and reopen the test file. A successful DSM browser login alone does not verify SMB access.

When to contact us

Send our Support Specialist the error code, editions and versions, share path with private names redacted, and whether local versus domain accounts are affected. Domain-managed PCs may require their IT administrator.
