Why is Synology QuickConnect slow when my local NAS connection is fast?

ACE SUPPORT · SYNOLOGY

QuickConnect may use a relay when a direct connection cannot be established. The longer route can be slower even when the NAS is healthy. Compare the same task locally and remotely before changing storage or exposing additional services.

Applies to

DSM QuickConnect-enabled services. Results depend on the application, internet upload capacity, client network and whether a direct, hole-punched or relayed route is available.

Before you begin

Keep relay enabled if it is the only working access path until an alternative has been tested. Do not publish SMB directly to the internet or enable broad UPnP rules for troubleshooting.

Work through these checks

  1. Choose one non-sensitive test file and one application. Record its size, transfer direction and approximate time. Test while other large backups and downloads are idle so that the comparison has a useful baseline.
  2. On the same trusted local network, connect using the NAS's approved local address and repeat the task. Confirm you are using the expected NAS. A quick local result suggests investigating the remote route rather than assuming the disks need replacement.
  3. Repeat through QuickConnect from the external client network. Check both sites' available internet bandwidth, especially the NAS site's upload speed for downloads from the NAS. Phone reception, Wi-Fi congestion and other uploads can affect the result.
  4. Have the administrator review Control Panel > External Access > QuickConnect > Advanced and its relay setting. Synology documents that relay access can have higher latency. Keep a record of the current configuration before changing it.
  5. For regular large transfers, ask the administrator to review an approved direct access or VPN design appropriate to the organisation. Any firewall, router or service exposure change needs its own security and rollback review. Do not treat automatic router port opening as a universal performance fix.

Confirm the result

Repeat the same test after any approved network change, noting the access method and both elapsed times. Confirm the intended applications still connect. A faster browser page alone does not establish faster file sync.

When to contact us

Send our Support Specialist the NAS and DSM versions, application, file size, direction, local/remote timings and network layout. Do not send QuickConnect credentials or public screenshots containing private account details.
