NVR: How to customize the transport protocol for my IP camera?
Last Updated 10 years ago

Once you set up an IP camera in Surveillance Station, you can configure the advanced device settings to fine-tune the video streaming performance according to your need and preference.

In the Edit Camera window of your IP camera, go to Device Settings > Advanced, and you will see the following options in the Transport protocol drop-down list in the RTSP & RTP Setting section:

  • Auto: Surveillance Station will automatically try to establish the RTSP connection by using the protocols in the following order: UDPTCPHTTP. If the camera is disconnected, Surveillance Station will use the last protocol to resume the connection.
  • UDP: UDP provides lower latency and higher transfer rate. However, this protocol may deliver lower video quality through lack of network bandwidth for not having a retransmission mechanism.
  • TCP: TCP provides higher video quality. However, the retransmission mechanism of this protocol may consume more network bandwidth, and delivers higher latency through lack of network bandwidth.
  • HTTP: HTTP is an extension of TCP. By using this protocol, video streaming over the Internet can avoid firewall restrictions.
