Frequently Asked Question

General: What stops my Synology NAS from entering System Hibernation?
Last Updated 8 years ago

System Hibernation is only supported on DS213+ and D413. When System Hibernation is enabled, your Synology NAS will enter System Hibernation mode 60 seconds after HDD Hibernation, massively reducing power consumption.

There are three power-saving modes: HDD Hibernation, HDD Deep Sleep, and System Hibernation. Below is the mechanism of entering these power-saving modes and the steps of entering each mode will be briefly introduced.

When System Hibernation is enabled:
  1. Your Synology NAS enters HDD Hibernation first and continues monitoring network packets.
  2. If no unicast packets are received by your Synology NAS for two minutes, then your Synology NAS will enter System Hibernation.
  3. If any unicast packets are received by your Synology NAS within two minutes, then your Synology NAS will remain in HDD Hibernation and continue monitoring network packets for another two minutes.
  4. Once the total delay time exceeds the original hibernation time, your Synology NAS will enter HDD Deep Sleep mode.
Please see the flowchart below to further understand the System Hibernation mechanism.

Any SMB/CIFS broadcasting packets may prevent your Synology NAS from entering System Hibernation, including any Windows file browsers operating in the network. Should you wish to ignore CIFS broadcasting packets on entering System Hibernation, please select Ignore broadcasting packets from Windows Explorer. Please be aware that once this option is selected, SMB/CIFS packets cannot be used to exit System Hibernation. Attaching any USB device will also prevent the server from entering System Hibernation.
The services below prevent your Synology NAS from entering hibernation mode. These services will wake your Synology NAS from any hibneration mode.

Services

  • QuickConnect
  • DDNS

Packages

  • Download Station: Your Synology NAS cannot hibernate if Download Station is running eMule, RSS scheduled download, or active tasks.
  • Mail Station: Your Synology NAS cannot hibernate if Mail Station is running, even when IMAP/POP3 is deactivated and not configured.
  • Surveillance Station: Your Synology NAS cannot hibernate if there are any devices installed or tasks enabled in Surveillance Station.
  • Media Server: Your Synology NAS cannot hibernate if DMA logging is enabled in Media Server settings (Go to Media Server > General Settings > Diagnose).
  • Audio Station: Your Synology NAS cannot hibernate if logging is enabled in Audio Station settings (Go to Audio Station > Settings > Advanced > Enable Audio Station log for diagnosis).
  • Directory Server
  • Webalizer
  • Logitech® Media Server
  • Plex Media Server
  • Cloud Station Server: When Cloud Station Server is idle, your Synology NAS can enter hibernation mode.
  • Cloud Sync
  • Cloud Station Sharesync
  • PetaSpace
  • Other third party software or optware such as SABnzbd

Processes

  • Thumbnails and indexing: Your Synology NAS cannot hibernate while generating thumbnails or re-indexing multimedia files post-upgrade. During this time, the “synoindexd” process will be listed as “Running” (Go to Resource Monitor > Process).
  • Local Master Browser: Your Synology NAS cannot hibernate if Local Master Browser is enabled (Go to Control Panel > Win/Mac/NFS > Windows File Service > Advanced Settings > Enable Local Master Browser).
  • Windows Media Player: Your Synology NAS cannot hibernate if Windows Media Player's Network Sharing Service is enabled in the LAN.
  • Your Synology NAS cannot hibernate if a number of concurrent processes requires swap, where RAM capacity has been exceeded and HDDs are used temporarily for read/write operations.

Others

  • USB Devices: Your Synology NAS cannot enter System Hibernation if any USB devices are attached to the unit.
