General: What is Synology DDNS Service?
Last Updated 8 years ago

What is Synology DDNS Service?

DDNS (Dynamic Domain Name Service) simplifies connecting to your Synology NAS over the Internet by mapping a hostname to its IP address. As a DDNS provider, Synology offers a variety of host addresses (such as *.synology.me, *.DiskStation.me, *.myDS.me, etc.) free to registered users with a Synology Account to apply to their NAS devices. On the DSM web interface, go to Control Panel > External Access > DDNS for related settings. On the SRM web interface, go to Network Center > Internet > QuickConnect & DDNS for related settings.

Can Synology DDNS be used on a router or other network devices?

No, Synology DDNS usage is limited to Synology devices only.

Does Synology DDNS support wildcard?

Yes, wildcard settings are available to allow you to reach the same Synology NAS server using a different combination of subdomains. However, subdomain management is not supported. When you register a DDNS hostname from the Synology NAS, our DNS Server will create a record for your chosen domain (e.g. best.synology.me), as well as a record for *.best.synology.me to allow for subdomain access. No additional domain records can be added.

Does Synology DDNS support SSL connections? Why do I repeatedly receive "untrusted certificate" warnings when I try to connect to my NAS?

Yes, SSL is supported. You will get a warning when trying to connect to your Synology NAS if the certificate on your Synology NAS is self-signed. From DSM 6.0 on, you can get a free, trusted certificate from Let's Encrypt.
