Overview

Every Synology NAS server comes with a RESET button. There are two different reset modes: The first mode allows you to reset the administrator password and network settings; the second mode allows you to reinstall the operating system (this also resets the administrator password and network settings). Both methods make use of the RESET button. This article will guide you through the necessary steps.

1. Before you start

Before you start, make sure your Synology NAS is in ready status. You can launch Synology Assistant to find your server and make sure it is Ready under Status.

2. Reset the administrator password and network settings

This section will guide you through the necessary steps to reset the administrator password and network settings. After resetting your Synology NAS, your system configuration will result in:

• To restore admin account to default value.
• To reset the UI management port to 5000/5001.
• To reset IP, DNS, gateway, and other net interfaces to DHCP.
• To disable PPPoE.
• To disable auto block.
• To disable firewall rules.
• To unmount encrypted folders and disable Mount automatically on startup.
• To remove high-availability cluster.

Note: The RESET performs various functions on different versions of DSM. This FAQ explains in further detail. Before proceeding to reset your Synology NAS to factory default settings, you may also want to back up your current configuration.

To reset the administrator password and network settings:

1. Locate the RESET button which is located on the back panel of your Synology NAS.
Note: If you have difficulty locating the RESET button, please refer to the Quick Installation Guide for your model.

2. Using a paper clip, gently press and hold down the RESET button for about 4 seconds until your Synology NAS emits a beep sound. Release immediately.
   
Warning: Pressing the RESET button continuously will cause the operating system to reinstall.

3. Launch Synology Assistant and double-click your Synology NAS to login. At the login page use “admin” as the user name and leave the password field blank. You can now reconfigure the administrator password and other network settings.
Note: This procedure is only applicable when DSM is installed. If DSM is not installed, nothing will happen; however, the system will still beep. See the next section for how to reinstall DSM.

3. Reset to reinstall the operating system

This section will guide you through the necessary steps to reinstall the operating system (this also resets the administrator password and network settings).

Note: Reinstalling DSM removes your current system configuration settings, but your data will remain intact. However, in case of any accidental data loss, it is strongly recommended to use DSM's Backup & Replication service to back up your data and system configuration settings before performing operating system reinstallation.

To reset your Synology NAS and reinstall the operating system:

1. Locate the RESET button which is located on the back panel of your Synology NAS.
Note: If you have difficulty locating the RESET button, please refer to the Quick Installation Guide for your model.

2. Using a paper clip, gently press and hold down the RESET button for about 4 seconds until your Synology NAS emits a beep sound. Release immediately.
3. Within the next 10 seconds, press and hold down the RESET button again for about 4 seconds until your Synology NAS emits another beep sound.
4. You will see the STATUS light on your Synology NAS's front panel now blinking orange.
5. Run Synology Assistant and find your Synology NAS. You will see Configuration Lost under Status.
6. Double-click your Synology NAS to launch the Setup Wizard and reinstall the operating system. You can also follow the installation instructions in the Quick Installation Guide or from your installation disc to set up your Synology NAS.
Note: It is recommended that you download the latest DSM version from Download Center.
