Compatibility List: How do I check the PID and VID of my USB device?
Last Updated 8 years ago

All USB devices have a Vendor ID (VID) and Product ID (PID) which are used to distinguish it from other USB devices. Many USB devices (especially Wi-Fi and LTE dongles) are often revised or have regional variants while retaining the same model name. This means that chipsets and driver support may vary, and even though one revision of a model may work on your Synology NAS or Synology Router, a newer one may not. Therefore, it is important to know the PID and VID of your device.

To find your PID & VID on DSM:

  1. Go to Control Panel > Info Center > General.
  2. Under External Devices you can see your connected USB devices.
  3. Hover your cursor over your desired USB device to view its PID and VID.

To find your PID & VID on Windows:

  1. Go to Control Panel > Device Manager and find your desired USB device.
  2. Double click the device or right click and select Properties.
  3. Go to the Details tab and select Hardware ID to view its PID and VID.

To find your PID & VID on Mac:

  1. Go to About this Mac > Overview > System Report.
  2. Under Hardware, select USB.
  3. Find your desired USB device and select it to view its PID and VID.

To find your PID & VID on Linux:

  1. Run the lsusb command to list details of your connected USB devices.
  2. Find your desired USB device in the list to see your PID and VID.
You can find the PID and VID of Synology's supported Wi-Fi and LTE dongles listed in our compatibility list here. However, even if a certain model has been listed, Synology has only tested that specific PID/VID configuration so compatibility cannot be guaranteed.
If you find a product PID/VID that works but it is not listed in the Synology Products Compatibility List, please click the Suggest Device button to help us ensure and maintain its accuracy.
