Frequently Asked Question

NVR: How do I choose the right PC for Surveillance Station Live View?
Last Updated 7 years ago

A PC's ability to run Live View fluently on Surveillance Station web interface and Surveillance Station Client is mainly determined by its CPU (central processing unit). Surveillance Station Client 1.1 and onward supports GPU (graphics processing unit) acceleration for smoother video streaming and improved display performance, taking advantage of your CPU's built-in graphics card.

The comparison chart below shows how different CPUs deliver different Live View performance results1 on Surveillance Station web browser plugin and Surveillance Station Client. It is recommended to have at least 16GB2 DDR4 RAM installed on your PC to ensure the best viewing experience. Synology also provided a PC-less Live View solution, VisualStation , to display Surveillance Station Live View.

In addition, the Live View performance of Surveillance Station web player on Chrome is equivalent to the performance results of Surveillance Station Client shown in the table below. However, currently Surveillance Station web player only supports up to 36 channels. For more information, please refer to this article.

Please note each IP cameras' bitrate setting and total available network bandwidth might impact the performance on the total FPS. The result below is only a benchmark for your reference.

_____
1 The Live View test is conducted with H.264 format. The PC uses 16GB of DDR4 RAM, while CPU usage remains at around 85%. The screen resolution is 1920x1820.
2 16GB DDR4 RAM is the recommended PC specification. A PC with less than 16GB RAM is not guaranteed to provide smooth live view experience. It is thus suggested to test the performances with the actual environment before project deployment.
3 The GPU Manual adjustment option will be enabled when conducting performance tests for Surveillance Station Client, the desktop client of Surveillance Station. For more information on how to enable GPU acceleration, please refer to this article.
4 The maximum channel layout on Surveillance Station is 100 (10x10). Please connect multiple monitors to the same PC to display more than 100 channels.
5 The Live View test for Surveillance Station is conducted on Internet Explorer 11.
