Frequently Asked Question
Why does UniFi Protect live view buffer or show a black screen when the cameras are still recording?
ACE SUPPORT · UBIQUITI
A viewing problem can occur between the Protect host and your phone or browser while camera recording continues. Compare local and remote viewing before altering cameras or storage.
Applies to
UniFi Protect on ENVR, UCG-Fiber or another supported host, with supported Protect apps/browsers. This article covers slow or failed viewing. If the camera itself loses power or recordings contain matching gaps, diagnose that camera/network path separately.
Before you begin
Keep existing recordings and camera adoption intact. A black viewing tile is not a reason to remove cameras, factory-reset them or format a recorder.
Test VPN or extension interference only on a device and connection you control. Restore protection after the comparison; do not disable the site's firewall wholesale.
Work through these checks
- Choose one camera and note the time. Check whether its timeline contains a playable recent clip from another device. This separates an unavailable viewing client from a camera that never delivered video to the recorder.
- While on the same local network, access the Protect host by its local IP address in a supported browser. Compare the mobile app and a second browser or phone. Then compare mobile-data access. Keep the same camera and timeframe for each test.
- If local access works and remote access fails, check the client internet connection, authorised remote access and Ubiquiti service status. Record whether failure occurs on all remote networks or only a workplace, hotel or mobile connection.
- If one browser or phone fails, update its app/browser and check data permissions. On your own test device, compare without a suspected VPN, privacy extension or network-filtering app, then re-enable items individually. A successful comparison identifies what needs a scoped adjustment.
- For a busy live-view grid, try fewer simultaneous streams and inspect the viewing computer's CPU usage. Check that the host is within its supported camera capacity. If a wireless camera has matching recording gaps, investigate its signal and uplink rather than treating that as a display issue.
Confirm the result
Confirm the chosen camera displays normally on the affected client, both locally and on the required remote connection. Check a newly recorded clip as well. Viewing at reduced quality does not automatically mean stored footage lost its original quality.
When to contact us
Give our Support Specialist the host/camera models, versions, browser/phone OS and a local-versus-remote result table. Include whether recordings continue. Share logs through a private support route and omit customer video from public posts.
