Frequently Asked Question
Why does my UniFi access point show FE or a 100 Mbps uplink, with Wi-Fi stuck around 90 Mbps?
ACE SUPPORT · UBIQUITI
An unexpectedly slow Ethernet uplink can limit every wireless client on that access point. Check the physical link before changing Wi-Fi channels or buying another AP.
Applies to
U7-Lite and other UniFi APs with gigabit or faster Ethernet, connected by cable to a compatible switch or injector. U7-Lite has a 2.5 GbE port; the negotiated rate also depends on the complete upstream path.
Before you begin
Keep port speed on automatic negotiation during normal diagnosis. Forcing a faster rate does not repair a damaged cable and can make the AP unreachable.
Reseating a PoE cable interrupts that AP and its clients. Arrange a suitable maintenance window.
Work through these checks
- Record which AP is affected, its firmware, the upstream port and the displayed link rate in UniFi Network. Compare another AP or a wired client. A speed-test result by itself cannot identify whether the limit is Wi-Fi, Ethernet or the ISP.
- Check the rated speed of every item between the AP and gateway, including the injector, switch, wall outlets and patch leads. A 100 Mbps component remains a bottleneck even when the AP supports a faster connection.
- Reseat both ends, then substitute a short, known-good cable directly between the AP and a suitable switch port. Bypass the wall run and couplers for this test. Change one item at a time so that the result identifies a cause.
- Allow the link to negotiate again and read the rate in the controller. If the direct cable works, have the original run and terminations checked. If the fault follows one port, repeat with another compatible port; if it follows the AP, retain that evidence.
- After the wired rate is correct, repeat the same near-AP Wi-Fi test with the same client. Review wireless performance separately if the Ethernet link stays healthy but application speed remains low.
Confirm the result
The AP maintains the expected negotiated rate supported by both ends, and repeat tests no longer hit the previous ceiling. Keep the result under observation because an intermittent cable fault may return after movement.
When to contact us
Send our Support Specialist the exact AP/switch/injector models, firmware, negotiated rates and the cable/port substitution results. Do not factory-reset an otherwise adopted AP for a physical-link problem.
