Frequently Asked Question
Why is my Cloud Gateway Fiber internet speed lower than my fibre plan, even when the dashboard speed test looks good?
ACE SUPPORT · UBIQUITI
A gateway speed test and a client speed test measure different paths. Compare them methodically to locate a port, client, policy or ISP limitation.
Applies to
UCG-Fiber with a current supported UniFi Network release, Ethernet WAN and a wired test computer. PPPoE, SFP modules, VPN routing and security features can change achievable throughput. Fibre-plan speed is not a promise for every client or application.
Before you begin
Keep threat protection and business access policies enabled during the initial checks. Do not disable security permanently to improve a speed-test figure.
Do not change ISP authentication, VLAN or ONT configuration, install an unverified SFP module, or apply a forum SSH workaround without an approved network plan.
Work through these checks
- Write down the subscribed service, WAN type and the exact path from ONT to gateway to test computer. Note which ports and adapters are used. Pause unrelated heavy traffic and use the same test server for comparisons.
- Run the gateway's internet test, then a wired client test. Compare download and upload separately. A fast gateway result with a slow client directs attention to the client path, rather than automatically proving an ISP or gateway fault.
- Check the negotiated rates of WAN and client-side links and test with known-good cables and a suitable wired adapter. Bypass an intermediate switch for one comparison where practical. A computer, dock or upstream port may be the slower component.
- Inspect configured client speed limits, bandwidth rules and Smart Queues. The dedicated Smart Queues guidance says its configured upload/download values limit throughput and targets lower-bandwidth links. Record a potentially unintended limit before changing it.
- Note whether the test uses PPPoE, VPNs, filtering or other processing. Compare the deployment against the exact gateway specification and current release notes. If the problem started with an update or affects one port only, collect repeatable results for support instead of applying older firmware advice.
Confirm the result
Repeat gateway and wired client tests under the same conditions, and record negotiated rates alongside results. Check the actual slow application too; a speed-test improvement alone does not prove that its problem is fixed.
When to contact us
Send our Support Specialist the WAN/ISP type, redacted topology, versions, port rates and test table. We can separate a local bottleneck from a reproducible compatibility case before an ISP or manufacturer escalation.
