Frequently Asked Question
Can a WD Red SMR drive explain slow NAS writes or a very long RAID rebuild?
QUICK ANSWER
Recording technology matters under sustained writes. Check the exact drive model: WD Red Plus and Red Pro use CMR, while some WD Red models use SMR.
Applies to: WD hard drives used in compatible Synology, QNAP, ASUSTOR or other NAS systems. A slow rebuild is not proof that SMR is the only cause.
Work through these checks
- Record every member drive's full model and the NAS's RAID/pool status. Check the drive's own specification rather than relying on a red label or capacity alone.
- Check the NAS manufacturer's compatibility list for that exact model and firmware. SMR can struggle with sustained random rewriting and is not a universal substitute for a supported CMR RAID drive.
- Review drive health, recent errors, competing backup jobs and available space. These can also slow writes or rebuilding, including on a CMR array.
- If a replacement is required, back up accessible data first and follow the NAS's supported one-drive-at-a-time replacement procedure. Choose a compatible capacity and recording type; do not remove multiple members to speed up the process.
Confirm the result
Monitor the pool's health and rebuild progress until complete. Compare normal workloads only after the rebuild and background tasks have finished.
If you need help
Include these details in your ticket: NAS model, RAID type, drive model list, health reports and the time/progress of the rebuild. Keep serial numbers in the private ticket.
