Why does WD Drive Utilities say “Attach a supported WD drive” when Windows can see my disk?

QUICK ANSWER

WD branding does not mean every drive supports every WD utility. Check the software's supported-model list before treating the message as a disk failure.

Applies to: WD Drive Utilities and WD Security on Windows/macOS with directly attached external drives.

Work through these checks

  1. Identify the exact drive family and the application showing the message. WD Elements and WD_BLACK drives are not supported by WD Drive Utilities or WD Security under WD's current guidance; other models have their own support limits.
  2. Check whether files are accessible in File Explorer or Finder. If the drive is password-locked, unlock it through the supported method without erasing it.
  3. For a supported model, connect directly using a suitable USB data cable, then install the current supported WD software and restart the computer.
  4. On Windows, check that the installed WD Drive Manager and relevant WD services are running. If the model is unsupported, use diagnostics intended for that drive rather than repeatedly reinstalling an incompatible utility.

Confirm the result

For a supported model, the correct utility should identify it. For an unsupported model, normal file access and appropriate diagnostics are the checks that matter.

Before going further: Do not click Erase, change RAID mode or format the disk to make a utility recognise it.
