Can WD reset a forgotten My Passport or My Book password without erasing my files?

ACE SUPPORT · WD

WD Security does not offer a forgotten-password reset that preserves access to encrypted files, and WD support cannot supply a replacement password. Erasing the drive makes it reusable but destroys the existing data. Separate a genuinely forgotten password from a drive or connection fault.

Applies to

Password-protected My Passport and My Book models using WD Security. This does not describe BitLocker, FileVault, an operating-system login or a WD website account password.

Before you begin

Do not deliberately exhaust attempts to reach an erase screen, run firmware tools or accept a paid password-recovery promise without an exact-model assessment. Recovery is not guaranteed.

Work through these checks

  1. Identify which application is asking for the password and record the exact drive model. A WD account password reset does not reset the password protecting the physical drive.
  2. Check your approved password manager, password hint and previous setup records. Confirm the keyboard layout and typing carefully without sharing the password with anyone. If another authorised computer still unlocks the drive automatically, preserve the accessible files to separate storage before changing that setup.
  3. If you believe the correct password is being rejected, check the original cable and supported WD utility on the intended operating system. WD notes that drive, file-system or media faults can also prevent access. Abnormal sounds, I/O errors or repeated disconnects require a separate assessment.
  4. Stop before any Erase Drive or format step if the existing files are needed. A new password set after erasing protects an empty reused drive; it does not restore the old files or decrypt the previous contents.
  5. Ask our Support Specialist to review the exact model, symptom and available backups. If the data warrants a recovery assessment, discuss it with a suitable provider privately before destructive action. Claims in forum replies do not establish a guaranteed recovery method for your model.

Confirm the result

For an authorised successful unlock, copy important files and open the copies independently. If the password remains unknown, the outcome is still locked; detecting the drive or displaying an erase option is not data recovery.

When to contact us

Escalate when a known password suddenly stops working, the drive behaves abnormally or the only copy of critical data is locked. Provide symptoms and model details, never the password in a public post.
