Why does my WD Ultrastar SAS hard drive not work in a SATA PC or USB dock?

QUICK ANSWER

A SAS drive needs a compatible SAS controller and connection path. A passive cable or a SATA-only USB dock cannot translate SAS into SATA.

Applies to: WD Ultrastar enterprise HDDs. The same product family can include different SAS and SATA part numbers.

Work through these checks

  1. Read the complete drive model and interface from the label or datasheet. Capacity and the Ultrastar family name alone do not identify whether it is SAS or SATA.
  2. Check the host controller, backplane and enclosure specifications. Many desktop motherboards, consumer NAS units and USB docks support SATA only, even when a connector looks similar.
  3. If the drive is SAS, use a supported SAS HBA/RAID controller with the correct cable, backplane, power supply and firmware. A SAS controller may support SATA drives, but this does not make the reverse connection work.
  4. For an existing enterprise drive, also confirm sector format and controller compatibility before making changes. Ask the system administrator to assess drives removed from an array.

Confirm the result

The compatible controller should enumerate the correct model and capacity. Only initialise or format a genuinely new/empty drive after checking that no existing data is required.

Before going further: Do not force connectors, modify power pins or reformat an unknown drive to solve an interface mismatch.

If you need help

Include these details in your ticket: Drive part number, controller/backplane/dock models and a clear connector photo.
