Frequently Asked Question
Why has remote access stopped working on my older WD My Cloud OS 3?
QUICK ANSWER
WD ended My Cloud OS 3 support and remote-access services on 15-Apr-2022. That service retirement is different from a failed hard drive.
Applies to: Older WD My Cloud devices running OS 3. My Cloud Home and OS 5 are separate products/platforms.
Work through these checks
- Confirm the exact model and installed firmware from the local dashboard or product label. Do not identify the generation by case colour or name alone.
- On the same trusted LAN, check whether the existing shares are accessible using the device's local address and your normal authorised account.
- Back up accessible data to another device. Check whether the exact model is eligible for a supported migration; not every OS 3 model can upgrade to OS 5.
- Plan replacement or migration for ongoing supported remote access. Keep the old unit on a trusted local network while recovering data, rather than exposing its dashboard or SMB service to the internet.
Confirm the result
Local file access and a verified independent backup are the useful tests. Reinstalling an old phone app cannot restore a retired cloud service.
Before going further: Do not reset or initialise the unit merely because cloud login fails. If local access is also unavailable and the data matters, seek assessment before recovery changes.
If you need help
Include these details in your ticket: Exact My Cloud model, firmware, local-access result and whether a separate backup exists. Do not include account passwords.
