Why does my WD external drive keep disconnecting during file transfers?

ACE SUPPORT · WD

Repeated disconnects can come from the cable, USB power, sleep behaviour, file-system trouble or a failing drive. Start with a controlled connection check and protect any readable data. Reformatting does not diagnose a loose connector or a hardware fault.

Applies to

WD direct-attached USB drives on Windows or macOS, including My Passport and desktop My Book. Password protection and diagnostic-software support differ by model.

Before you begin

Do not keep retrying large writes to an unstable drive. Avoid file-system repair, formatting and long diagnostic scans before securing needed data. Safely eject storage whenever it is functioning normally.

Work through these checks

  1. Stop long transfers and note when the drive disappears: immediately, when the cable moves, after inactivity or under a heavy copy. Record the exact error and whether the computer also loses other USB devices.
  2. Check the original USB cable and both connectors without forcing or repeatedly wiggling them. Connect directly to a suitable computer port. Make one controlled comparison with a compatible known-good cable or another port. A cable working with a different device does not conclusively clear it for this drive.
  3. For a desktop drive, use its correct power supply and check the power connection. For a portable drive, test a suitable direct port rather than an unpowered hub. Do not substitute an adapter solely because the connector fits.
  4. If disconnects occur only after sleep or idle time, review the computer's power settings and WD's model-appropriate standby guidance with the administrator. Keep any test change limited and record the previous setting.
  5. If the connection becomes stable, copy essential files to separate healthy storage and verify them. If errors persist across a known-good connection or the drive makes abnormal sounds, stop and request an assessment before repair tools or lengthy tests.

Confirm the result

Use a small non-sensitive copy to confirm the connection stays mounted, then reopen the copied file. Monitor a normal session after backup. One completed copy does not rule out an intermittent fault.

When to contact us

Send our Support Specialist the model, OS, cable and hub arrangement, exact error, sleep timing and results of the controlled comparison. Persistent faults may require replacement, with data recovery considered separately.
