Frequently Asked Question
My WD drive is missing or asks to initialise. How do I protect the existing files?
ACE SUPPORT · WD
If a previously used drive disappears or Windows asks to initialise it, preserve the data first. The message can result from a connection, power, unsupported file system or drive fault. Initialising or formatting is not a safe first diagnostic step for a drive containing files.
Applies to
WD My Passport, My Passport Ultra, My Book and similar external USB drives on Windows or macOS. Encryption-enabled and password-protected models require their original compatible access method.
Before you begin
Do not run disk cleaning commands, initialise, format, repair the file system or start long scans on an unbacked-up failing source. Recovery is not guaranteed.
Work through these checks
- Stop copying or installing files to the drive. Cancel any initialise, format or erase prompt. If it clicks, repeatedly spins up and down, was dropped or contains the only copy of essential data, disconnect it and seek a data-recovery assessment.
- Record the exact model, original operating system, recent changes and whether the indicator lights or drive sound changed. Do not open the enclosure or move an internal disk into another enclosure to test it.
- For a drive without signs of physical damage, check the original cable and power supply. Connect directly to a suitable computer port, then make one controlled comparison with a known-good compatible cable or another computer. Use the correct original power adapter for a desktop My Book.
- Inspect Windows Disk Management or macOS Disk Utility without changing anything. Note whether the device appears, whether its reported capacity is correct, and whether a recognised volume is present. A USB device name alone does not prove its data area is readable.
- If the drive becomes readable, copy important files to separate healthy storage and open representative copies. If it shows zero capacity, RAW or unallocated space, or the test connection is unstable, stop and send the observations to our Support Specialist before repair tools.
Confirm the result
Verify the backup independently and confirm a stable connection before considering further diagnostics. Seeing the device in Device Manager is not the same as reading the files.
When to contact us
Escalate persistent detection failure, abnormal sounds, wrong capacity or I/O errors. Provide model, symptoms and a redacted Disk Management or Disk Utility view. Warranty replacement and data recovery are different services.
