Frequently Asked Question
What should I check before rebuilding a degraded WD My Book Duo?
ACE SUPPORT · WD
Treat Degraded, Unknown and Cannot Access Data as different conditions. Preserve accessible files and confirm the exact My Book Duo generation, RAID mode and affected disk before planning a repair. A rebuild or enclosure swap is not a general-purpose recovery button.
Applies to
USB My Book Duo desktop RAID storage. Do not apply this workflow to My Cloud, My Book Live Duo or Thunderbolt Duo. Replacement and repair instructions must match the exact part number and generation.
Before you begin
Do not hot-swap unless the exact manual explicitly supports it. Hardware encryption and enclosure behaviour vary by part number; direct SATA access is not a universal data-access method.
Work through these checks
- Stop optional writes and open WD Drive Utilities for the correct device. Record the current configuration, overall RAID status and each disk's status. Keep the disks in their original slots and record their positions without removing them.
- Check the RAID mode. A two-disk enclosure is not automatically a mirror: RAID 0, RAID 1 and individual-disk configurations have different failure behaviour. If the existing mode or disk order is uncertain, stop before any Configuration operation.
- If files remain readable, copy the important data to separate healthy storage and verify the copies. A degraded RAID 1 can have no remaining disk-failure tolerance. Continued normal activity or repeated rebuild attempts can put the remaining readable copy at risk.
- If files are inaccessible, a disk clicks or more than one component appears faulty, obtain a recovery assessment before testing or replacing parts. Do not initialise the disks in Windows or attempt to create a fresh RAID array over them.
- For a backed-up, diagnosed single-disk fault, ask our Specialist or WD to confirm the exact supported replacement and the model-specific procedure. Keep the original disks until the restored storage and backup are verified. Do not move them to a different-generation enclosure merely because its capacity matches.
Confirm the result
After an approved repair, check the intended RAID mode, both disk states and overall health in the utility. Reopen representative files and confirm the separate backup. Healthy RAID status alone does not prove that all data is intact.
When to contact us
Escalate Unknown, Cannot Access Data, Data Loss Detected, repeated rebuild failure or unclear disk identity. Supply the enclosure part number, utility version and status screenshots with serial numbers hidden publicly.
