My camera stops recording or says the SanDisk card is too slow. Which checks matter?

QUICK ANSWER

Match the camera's required card type and sustained video speed class. A high maximum read speed or an endurance label alone does not establish recording compatibility.

Applies to: Cameras and surveillance recorders using SanDisk SD or microSD cards.

Work through these checks

  1. Record the camera model, firmware and recording mode, including resolution, frame rate and bitrate where shown. Check that model's required capacity, UHS/video speed class and supported-card list.
  2. Read the markings on the actual card. Compare its video/write rating with the selected mode; do not treat capacity, app rating or maximum read speed as the same measure.
  3. Back up recordings before using the camera's own supported format function. Confirm that the card has enough available space and that any adapter is properly seated and suitable for the device.
  4. Make a short controlled recording in the normal mode. If it stops, compare a known-compatible healthy card. A lower supported recording setting can help isolate a throughput limit, but does not certify the original card for the higher mode.

Confirm the result

Play the complete test clip and confirm that recording continues beyond the point where it previously stopped. Recheck after the camera reaches normal operating temperature.

Before going further: Protect important footage before formatting or testing. Replace unreliable recording media rather than relying on a one-off successful clip.

If you need help

Include these details in your ticket: Camera and firmware, exact card markings/capacity, recording settings, error text and whether a compatible comparison card works.
