SanDisk SD or microSD Card Is Locked, Read-Only or Write-Protected

ACE KNOWLEDGE BASE · SANDISK

Check the SD lock/adapter and protect readable files before attempting reuse.

Copy readable files before trying to restore write access. A SanDisk card reported as locked, read-only or write-protected may have a physical lock-switch issue or a protective condition within the storage. The message alone does not identify which.

1. Check the Full-Size SD Lock Switch

A full-size SD card has a side lock tab. With the card removed safely, check that the tab is in its unlocked position before reinserting it. A microSD card itself does not use that full-size side tab; check the SD adapter if one is being used.

A loose tab can move while the card is inserted. Do not tape, wedge or force a damaged card or adapter into the reader. Try a suitable known-good reader or adapter to separate that component from the card.

2. Treat Persistent Protection Carefully

SanDisk explains that storage can enter a protective read-only state following wear or data-block corruption. If the physical switch does not explain the issue, secure the accessible data and record the behaviour. Do not assume a registry change or an unofficial utility can restore a failing card.

3. Decide Whether Recovery or Reuse Comes First

If important files cannot be copied, stop before formatting or erasing and discuss recovery options. Formatting is destructive. Once required files are safely copied and verified, assess reuse against the card and host instructions. A card that remains write-protected may need replacement rather than further recording attempts.

Warranty replacement and recovery of the old files are separate questions. Keep purchase evidence and avoid assuming that a replacement arrangement includes data recovery.

4. Record the Test Results

Submit the exact card/capacity, host device, adapter and reader models; the full error; whether files can be read; and the result with another suitable reader. Redact file names and personal material from screenshots. Use the SanDisk product range to identify the card family.
