Frequently Asked Question
SanDisk Memory Card Not Detected by a Computer or Camera
ACE KNOWLEDGE BASE · SANDISK
Isolate the card, adapter, reader and host while protecting existing files.
Protect the files before accepting a format or initialise prompt. When a SanDisk memory card is missing, first separate the card, adapter, reader and host device. A camera not seeing a card and a computer not seeing its USB reader are different symptoms.
1. Check the Card and Host Match
Record the exact card family and capacity, plus the camera, recorder or computer model. Check the host's supported capacity and card specification. Similar-looking cards are not interchangeable simply because they fit the slot.
2. Isolate the Reader Path
- Stop the recording or file operation and remove the card using the device's normal safe procedure.
- Inspect the card, adapter and reader for visible damage. Do not force the card into a tight slot or attempt to open its casing.
- If using microSD in an SD adapter, try a suitable alternate adapter or a compatible direct microSD reader/slot.
- Try a known-good reader or computer connection, changing one item at a time. Record whether the reader itself appears and whether the card then becomes visible.
3. Keep Recovery Separate from Reuse
If the files are important and unavailable elsewhere, pause before formatting, initialising or running a repair that writes to the card. If readable, copy the required files to separate storage and check the copies first. Repeatedly recording onto an unreliable card risks losing further material.
A card that works on a computer may still be incompatible with a camera's capacity or format requirements. Decide on reformatting for reuse only after the files are secured and the host's required format is confirmed.
4. Send a Useful Support Brief
Include the card model/capacity, host and reader models, operating system, exact message and results from each connection tested. State whether recovering the existing files or preparing the card for reuse is the priority. Do not attach private footage publicly. See the SanDisk product range for model identification.
