ASUSTOR works at home but EZ-Connect fails outside. What should I check?

QUICK ANSWER

Separate local NAS access from Cloud ID and remote connectivity. A working local IP proves the NAS is reachable on that LAN, not that its remote connection is working.

Applies to: ASUSTOR ADM with EZ-Connect/Cloud ID and supported client apps. Company networks may use an approved VPN instead.

Work through these checks

  1. Check normal ADM access on the local network. Record the NAS's gateway, DNS and internet connection status without changing working shared-folder permissions.
  2. In Settings > EZ-Connect, verify that the intended Cloud ID is configured and the remote service is enabled. Confirm the client app is using the same Cloud ID and correct NAS account.
  3. Test from mobile data with Wi-Fi switched off. This separates a true outside-network test from a local connection using the same name.
  4. Check whether the failure affects every remote client or only one network. Company firewalls, VPN policies or NAS security blocks may need an administrator's review. Relay connections may also perform differently from direct LAN access.

Confirm the result

Sign in from the approved outside connection and read a small permitted file. Do not judge remote speed against an unrelated local wired test.

Before going further: Do not expose SMB directly to the internet or turn off NAS security protections to make remote access work.

If you need help

Include these details in your ticket: ADM/app versions, Cloud ID with sensitive parts redacted, connection/error message and local-versus-mobile-data test results.
