Frequently Asked Question
Why can I sign into ASUSTOR ADM but get Access Denied on a Windows shared folder?
QUICK ANSWER
ADM login and shared-folder access use different permissions. Check the actual SMB user, share permissions and any Windows ACL or group deny entries.
Applies to: ASUSTOR NAS using SMB file sharing from Windows. Menu details depend on ADM and whether Windows ACL is enabled.
Work through these checks
- Confirm the Windows connection is using the intended NAS user. A saved Windows credential for another account can make the result look inconsistent.
- In ADM Access Control > Shared Folders, inspect the affected share's user and group permissions. A Deny Access entry can override an allow entry.
- If Windows ACL is enabled, inspect the folder/file permissions and inheritance as well. The user needs the appropriate share permission and file-level access.
- Test a small dedicated folder using the intended account. Grant only the required access, then reconnect that user's SMB session if credentials changed.
Confirm the result
The user should perform only the intended actions: read, create or modify as authorised. Test another restricted share to confirm it has not accidentally become accessible.
Before going further: Do not disable Windows ACL as a shortcut. ASUSTOR warns that disabling it can reassign broad read/write permissions. Avoid granting Everyone full control.
If you need help
Include these details in your ticket: ADM version, share name, affected account/group roles and redacted share/ACL screenshots. Never send the password.
