Frequently Asked Question
AOMEI Backupper reports a VSS or snapshot error. What should I check before retrying?
QUICK ANSWER
Record the exact snapshot error and check Windows VSS health, free space and competing backup jobs. A retry or a different snapshot setting does not prove application data is consistent.
Applies to: AOMEI Backupper on Windows when a backup fails during snapshot creation.
Work through these checks
- Open the failed task log and record the error code, time and affected volume. Confirm the backup destination has room, and check free space on the Windows/source volumes as well.
- Have an administrator run the read-only command vssadmin list writers and record any writer reporting a failure. Check Windows event logs around the same time without changing permissions or deleting shadow copies.
- Check whether another backup, snapshot or database-maintenance job ran concurrently. Arrange a supported retry after the conflict or failed writer's cause is resolved; restarting services or a server requires an appropriate maintenance window.
- Review the snapshot service option available in your Backupper version against the workload. Do not switch away from Microsoft VSS simply to remove an error when the application requires VSS-aware consistency. Databases and business applications may need their own supported backup integration.
Confirm the result
A successful job should be followed by the supported image check and a sample restore. Confirm the required application recovery method separately; a completed disk image alone is not that proof.
Before going further: Do not delete all shadow copies, reset VSS permissions or run registry scripts from a forum as a first response.
