Why is my Ablerex UPS runtime short even when the battery shows full?

QUICK ANSWER

A full-charge indication does not measure remaining battery capacity. Runtime depends on the actual load, battery condition, charging state and operating environment.

Applies to: Ablerex UPS systems, including ARES Plus RT, with shorter-than-expected battery runtime.

Work through these checks

  1. Record the exact UPS model, installed battery configuration and displayed load in watts or percent where available. A VA model number alone cannot predict runtime for your equipment.
  2. Check what changed: added servers, PoE devices, disks, an extra switch or higher operating load. Compare the actual connected load with the same model's published runtime information and supported battery configuration.
  3. Record battery age, replacement history, recent outages and whether the prescribed recharge period was completed. Frequent discharges or elevated temperatures can affect usable battery capacity.
  4. Have the responsible administrator plan any supported battery self-test or controlled load test in a maintenance window. Keep verified backups and shutdown arrangements; do not pull power from production equipment just to see how long it lasts.

Confirm the result

Compare measured load and the approved test result with the expected requirement. Battery replacement or additional capacity should be selected for the exact model and required shutdown time.

Before going further: Stop using equipment with a damaged/swollen battery, burning smell or abnormal heat. Battery work and mains-side inspection require the appropriate service personnel.

If you need help

Include these details in your ticket: UPS model, load reading, battery age/configuration, temperature conditions, recent outage/charge history and required shutdown runtime.
