Frequently Asked Question
Why does my Eaton desktop UPS alarm or switch off when the laser printer starts printing?
QUICK ANSWER
A laser printer's heating cycle can draw a high peak load. Do not assume that a UPS sized for a PC or NAS can also support the printer.
Applies to: Desktop/small-office Eaton UPS installations. A specialist-designed printer power solution requires its own load assessment.
Work through these checks
- Record whether the UPS reports overload or transfers to battery when the printer warms up. Save work on protected equipment before further testing.
- Check the printer's maximum/start-up demand and all other connected loads against the UPS's watt and VA ratings. Average printing consumption alone can miss the peak.
- Follow Eaton's desktop guidance: keep a laser printer off battery-backed outlets unless the complete solution is specifically designed and approved for it. Some UPS models provide surge-only outlets; not all do.
- Arrange a suitable separate mains connection or approved surge-only arrangement for the printer, then reassess the UPS load for the equipment that needs battery backup.
Confirm the result
The UPS should remain stable through normal PC/NAS workloads. Confirm that any remaining alarms have stopped without masking them.
Before going further: Do not increase breaker ratings, bypass overload protection or connect improvised multiway extensions to clear the alarm.
If you need help
Include these details in your ticket: UPS/printer models, output socket used, all connected equipment and the exact alarm.
