Frequently Asked Question
Why does my NAS or PC not detect the Eaton UPS over USB?
QUICK ANSWER
Check that the exact UPS has a USB communication port and that the host supports it. Powering the NAS from the UPS does not itself create a monitoring connection.
Applies to: USB-equipped Eaton UPS models, including supported 5E Gen2 variants, with compatible NAS or computer software.
Work through these checks
- Read the full UPS model suffix and identify the communication port in its manual. A charging/output port is not necessarily a UPS data interface.
- Connect the UPS directly to the host with a suitable USB data cable. Reseat it and try a known-good cable before changing software settings.
- Check whether the host enumerates the USB device. On Windows, inspect Device Manager; on a NAS, inspect its connected-device information and UPS settings.
- Check the NAS manufacturer's compatibility list for the exact UPS/USB identity. Enable supported UPS monitoring and configure the intended shutdown behaviour through the host's normal controls.
Confirm the result
The host should show a sensible UPS status and battery reading. Test controlled shutdown behaviour in a maintenance window; USB detection alone does not prove shutdown is configured correctly.
Before going further: Do not cut power to a working NAS or server to test detection. Avoid installing random USB drivers from third-party download sites.
If you need help
Include these details in your ticket: UPS model, NAS/PC and OS version, cable type, USB device identity and the monitoring error.
