Why can I store a PS5 game on my Seagate USB drive but not play it from there?

QUICK ANSWER

PS5 games can be archived on compatible USB extended storage, but must be copied back to console storage that supports running them. Supported PS4 games can run directly from USB extended storage.

Applies to: Seagate Game Drive and other compatible USB extended-storage drives connected to PlayStation 5.

Work through these checks

  1. Check whether the installed game is the PS4 or PS5 version. The play-from-USB rule differs between them.
  2. For a PS5 title stored on USB, use the console's storage management to move/copy it to supported internal console or M.2 storage before launching it.
  3. If the drive is not recognised, check PlayStation's USB speed/capacity requirements and connect directly to a storage-capable console port. Avoid USB hubs; not every front port on every PS5 model supports extended storage.
  4. Use Format as USB Extended Storage only for a drive whose existing contents are no longer needed. Formatting removes files, and a console-formatted drive is not a normal PC file-transfer disk.

Confirm the result

Launch the PS5 game after moving it to supported console storage. For a compatible PS4 title, confirm it launches from the USB library.

Before going further: Safely disconnect the drive through the console before unplugging it. A faster USB SSD does not remove the PS5 game-execution restriction.

If you need help
