Frequently Asked Question
SeaTools reports FAIL on my Seagate drive. What test results should I save?
QUICK ANSWER
Save the exact test name, result and failure code, then protect your files. A diagnostic failure needs assessment; it is not permission to erase or attempt every repair option.
Applies to: Supported Seagate HDD/SSD models tested with an appropriate current SeaTools version.
Work through these checks
- Back up readable files before testing. If the drive is clicking, unstable or holds irreplaceable data without another copy, seek recovery advice before stressing it with a long scan.
- Identify the correct model and serial number in SeaTools. Start with the supported non-destructive short diagnostic and record the result. Available tests differ by version and interface.
- If a test fails, save the log or screenshot, failure/test code, test duration and connection type. A USB bridge or controller may limit which tests are available.
- If the connection is suspect and the data is already protected, check a known-good cable or supported direct connection and repeat only the relevant test. A repeated failure is useful evidence for warranty assessment.
Confirm the result
Keep the original result as well as any retest. A PASS cannot guarantee future reliability or prove that the file system and every file are intact.
Before going further: Avoid Erase, Fix All or other write/repair functions unless the data is backed up and the operation is specifically intended.
If you need help
Include these details in your ticket: Drive model/serial, SeaTools version, full test log, failure code and proof of purchase for warranty enquiries.
