Frequently Asked Question
Why does Seagate Toolkit not offer Backup or Secure features for my external drive?
QUICK ANSWER
Toolkit features depend on the exact drive and operating system. A drive can work normally for file storage without supporting Toolkit Backup, Mirror or Seagate Secure.
Applies to: Seagate USB external drives used with Toolkit on supported Windows or macOS versions.
Work through these checks
- Record the full drive family and Toolkit version. Compare the model with Toolkit's feature compatibility list; do not assume every Expansion, One Touch or Game Drive has identical features.
- Check whether the drive is visible and readable in File Explorer or Finder. If the operating system cannot see it, resolve that connection/storage problem first.
- Check the expected function. Toolkit's Backup function is Windows-only, and its backup workflow does not support a network share or external-to-external backup as a general destination/source combination.
- For a supported model, connect directly with the proper data cable, update Toolkit and check its drive-status message. A full, locked or unreadable volume needs its own correction; changing formats is not a feature upgrade.
Confirm the result
The functions shown should match the exact model/OS combination. If a function is unsupported, use an appropriate supported backup application and verify a restore.
Before going further: Do not erase a working drive to make a missing software feature appear.
If you need help
Include these details in your ticket: Drive model, OS, Toolkit version, expected feature and the exact status message.
