Frequently Asked Question
Why is my Mercusys MS105G or MS108G connection limited to 100 Mbps?
QUICK ANSWER
Check the exact switch model and the negotiated speed of every link. MS105 and MS108 are Fast Ethernet models; MS105G and MS108G support gigabit connections.
Applies to: Mercusys unmanaged desktop switches and wired computers expecting a 1 Gbps link.
Work through these checks
- Read the model on the switch label, including its suffix. Also confirm that the router port and computer adapter support gigabit Ethernet. A faster switch cannot increase a 100 Mbps endpoint's port speed.
- Check the computer's Ethernet link speed before using an internet speed test. Link speed, internet throughput and file-copy speed measure different parts of the connection.
- Substitute a short known-good Cat 5e or better patch cable and another port. Gigabit copper Ethernet needs all four wire pairs; a cable or wall termination can still link at 100 Mbps when a pair is faulty.
- Keep the adapter's Speed & Duplex on Auto Negotiation for normal use. Compare the computer directly at the router, then through the switch, using the same cable and port where possible.
Confirm the result
Confirm a 1 Gbps negotiated link at both ends of the relevant path, then repeat the same transfer or speed test. A 1 Gbps link does not guarantee a 1 Gbps internet service.
If you need help
Include these details in your ticket: Switch model/version, router and adapter models, negotiated speeds, cable/wall-outlet route and results of the direct-router comparison.
