Why do my D-Link smart-switch settings disappear after a restart?

QUICK ANSWER

On models with separate running and saved configurations, Apply changes the current session but Save Configuration writes the settings to persistent storage.

Applies to: D-Link managed/smart switches with an explicit Save Configuration control, including relevant DGS-1210 firmware. Other models may save automatically.

Work through these checks

  1. Confirm the exact model, hardware revision and firmware. Check whether its interface has a Save/Save Configuration menu rather than assuming every D-Link switch behaves identically.
  2. Make one intended, low-impact configuration change and apply it. Check the live page to confirm the value took effect.
  3. Use Save > Save Configuration, Save Config or the equivalent persistent-save action for that firmware. Wait for the success indication before closing the page or removing power.
  4. Export a configuration backup. Verify persistence at the next planned maintenance restart, rather than restarting a busy production switch just for this check.

Confirm the result

Reopen the setting after the planned restart and compare it with the backup. If it still reverts, check for automatic provisioning, a restored startup file or a storage/firmware fault.

Before going further: Factory Reset is not the same as Save or Reboot. It can remove the network's management and VLAN configuration.

If you need help

Include these details in your ticket: Model/revision/firmware, changed setting, save confirmation and whether a management system provisions the switch.
