Why is my TL-WA855RE slow even when my phone shows a strong Wi-Fi signal?

ACE SUPPORT · TP-LINK

Your phone can have a strong link to the extender while the extender has a weak link back to the router. Its wireless and Ethernet limits also need to match your expectations.

Applies to

TL-WA855RE 2.4 GHz range extender. Check the label for hardware version and region before using LED descriptions or firmware. The V2 manual calls its suitable-location signal LED blue and weak-signal state red; other revisions must follow their own guide.

Before you begin

The advertised 300 Mbps figure is a wireless signal rate, not guaranteed internet throughput. The model's 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port also limits a wired client.

Moving the extender temporarily interrupts its clients. Record its original location and avoid resetting it just to run a placement comparison.

Work through these checks

  1. Using the same phone or laptop, measure internet performance next to the main router, then near the extender. Confirm which Wi-Fi device serves the client. If names are identical, use the router/extender's client list or a temporary clearly identified test connection.
  2. Check the extender's own signal indication and status, rather than the phone's bars alone. Place it where it still receives a healthy router signal, usually between the router and weak area rather than inside the dead zone. Try a nearer socket as a reversible test.
  3. Repeat the same test at the same client position and time conditions. Keep the extender away from large metal objects, electrical interference and heavily obstructed locations. One improved reading should be repeated before settling on the final position.
  4. Account for the extra wireless hop. The extender must carry traffic back to the main router; stronger local coverage can therefore coexist with lower throughput than a direct router connection.
  5. If testing its Ethernet port, remember that a cable from the computer to the extender does not turn the wireless router-to-extender link into a wired backhaul. The 100 Mbps port and upstream wireless path still apply. For higher sustained throughput, assess whether suitable Ethernet cabling or another network design is practical.

Confirm the result

Confirm stable browsing or the required video call in the target area across several tests, and record router versus extender results. Judge coverage and usable performance separately from the headline signal rate.

When to contact us

Provide our Support Specialist with the hardware version, router model, layout distances/obstacles, signal indication and direct-versus-extender results. Do not install another region's firmware or third-party flash dumps.
