Frequently Asked Question
Insta360 X5: Why does night footage look shaky, smeared or blurred while moving?
ACE SUPPORT · INSTA360
Night footage can smear during movement even when stabilisation is enabled. Check a local export and adjust capture settings with a short repeatable test.
Applies to
Insta360 X5 footage with motion blur, trailing or apparent jitter in low light. This is separate from a recording that stops or a heat warning.
Before you begin
PureVideo and noise reduction cannot guarantee sharp moving subjects in every dark environment. Avoid adopting a forum's fixed settings without testing your own light level and movement.
Work through these checks
- Compare a short local export with the preview and the version uploaded to social media. Camera/app previews may be compressed, while a social platform adds another processing stage. Keep the original file so the source of the quality loss can be checked.
- Start with Auto exposure. For an X5 night scene, try PureVideo rather than assuming a daytime setting will suit the location. Keep one baseline clip before changing anything.
- For insufficient light, test Jitter Blur Reduction or Low Light Stabilization where offered. The manufacturer warns that this can reduce brightness in very dark scenes. Judge the moving image, not only how bright the preview looks.
- If using Manual exposure, keep the camera steady and shorten the shutter exposure when movement smears. Increase ISO only as needed to maintain exposure. Record a few seconds after each adjustment instead of treating one shutter/ISO pair as correct for every night scene.
- Compare a stationary shot and a slow walking shot in the same lighting. The X5 touchscreen guide identifies shutter speed as the time light enters the camera: faster settings help dynamic shots but reduce the light captured.
- If noise remains, test Remove Grain when exporting in Studio. Compare detail as well as noise, using the same section and viewing size.
Confirm the result
Review the new exported test at normal speed. Check moving edges and bright lights for trailing, then compare brightness, noise and retained detail with the baseline.
When to contact us
Submit Ticket if a well-lit, stationary test also shows abnormal blur or if one lens is consistently affected. Provide the original clip, exposure/shooting settings and a matching local export.
