Solutions for Resolving ESET UEFI Warnings

For Those Unfamiliar with UEFI

  • If you're not confident about modifying UEFI settings or the update process, consult with a qualified technician for assistance.
  1. Update Vendor Firmware: Update your device's firmware via the vendor's website and re-run the ESET UEFI scan. If the issue persists, contact your vendor for a firmware upgrade that rectifies the problem.
  2. Ignore the Alert in ESET: If the warning remains after the vendor's update, configure ESET to exclude this alert from future scans.
    • For Home Users: Exclude a specific application name from being scanned in ESET’s home products.
    • For Business Users (Version 8 and Later):
      • Configure detection exceptions through Advanced Settings in your ESET security software.
      • Create exclusions via ESET PROTECT.image
      • Use the "Detection" option for the exclusion to be effective.
    • For Business Users (Version 7):
      • Navigate to detection exclusions in your ESET software.image
  3. Disable Potentially Unsafe Apps Detection:
    • For Home Users: Configure ESET to either detect or disregard unsafe or suspicious apps.
    • For Business Users: Control endpoint detection of potentially unsafe apps through ESET PROTECT.
  4. Reflash SPI Flash Memory: This is a complex procedure, unique for each motherboard. Consult your computer vendor for guidance.
  5. Incorrect Detection: If you suspect the detection is a false positive, send it to ESET's lab for further analysis.

How to Fortify Against UEFI Malware

  • Use Modern Chipsets: Make sure your computer systems have updated chipsets that include a Platform Controller Hub (Intel Series 5 chipsets and beyond).
  • Activate Secure Boot: UEFI malware usually isn't properly signed. Enabling Secure Boot helps prevent it from infiltrating your computer.
  • Update UEFI Firmware: Proactively update your UEFI firmware even if you haven't received any alerts. This could help in avoiding potential malware infections.

ESET and UEFI Malware Detection

  • UEFI scanning is integrated into the newest ESET products.
  • Detection for potentially unsafe or unwanted apps is turned off by default.
  • ESET can only alert you of a UEFI infection but can't remove it. UEFI scans occur during startup or On-demand scans when "Boot sectors/UEFI" is chosen.image
